Weight on Other Worlds

Class 9 Science: gravitation (mass and weight)

Travel to the Moon, Mars and Jupiter. Your mass stays the same, but your weight changes. Try jumping!

Words to know

Mass
How much matter you are made of, in kg. It is the same everywhere.
Weight
The pull of gravity on you, in newtons: weight = mass × g.
g
Acceleration due to gravity: 9.8 m/s² on Earth.
Gravitation
The force of attraction between any two masses.

Quick check

Answer 3 questions to check what you learned.

1. Your mass on the Moon compared with Earth is…
2. A 50 kg student on Earth (g = 9.8 m/s²) weighs…
3. Where would you weigh the most?

Try at home

Multiply your mass in kg by 9.8 to get your weight in newtons on Earth. Then divide by 6 for the Moon. Would a bathroom scale on the Moon show less?
