Simple Circuit

Class 6 Science: electricity and circuits

Put an object in the gap, close the switch and see if the bulb lights. Find out which things let electricity pass.

Words to know

Circuit
A closed path that electricity flows around.
Conductor
A material that lets electricity pass, like metals.
Insulator
A material that does not let electricity pass, like plastic or wood.
Switch
A device that opens or closes a circuit.

Quick check

Answer 3 questions to check what you learned.

1. Which of these lets electricity pass through it?
2. The bulb does not glow even with a nail in the gap. What is the most likely reason?
3. Why are electric wires covered in plastic?

Try at home

Look around your home for switches and plugs. Which parts are metal and which are plastic? The plastic covers keep you safe because plastic is an insulator. Never touch the inside of a socket.
