Reactivity Series

Class 10 Science: metals and non-metals (reactivity series, displacement)

Dip iron, copper, zinc and more into salt solutions. See which metal pushes another out, then rank the metals by reactivity.

Words to know

Reactivity series
A list of metals in order of how readily they react.
Displacement
A reaction in which a more reactive metal pushes a less reactive metal out of its compound.
Salt solution
A solution of a metal compound in water, such as copper sulphate.
Copper sulphate
A blue salt. Its colour fades when a more reactive metal displaces the copper.
Iron sulphate
A pale green salt formed when iron displaces copper from copper sulphate.

Quick check

Answer 3 questions to check what you learned.

1. Iron in copper sulphate solution turns the solution…
2. Copper in zinc sulphate solution…
3. Which metal is the most reactive here?

Try at home

With an adult, put an iron nail in copper sulphate solution (from a chemistry kit) and leave it for an hour. What happens to the nail and the colour?
