Motion Graphs
Class 9 Science: motion (velocity-time graphs)
Set a starting speed and an acceleration and read the velocity-time graph. The area under it is the distance.
Words to know
- Velocity
- Speed in a given direction, in m/s.
- Acceleration
- Change in velocity each second, in m/s².
- Uniform motion
- Moving at a constant velocity: a flat line on a v-t graph.
- Area under the graph
- On a velocity-time graph it equals the distance travelled.

Try at home
In a car or bus, watch the speedometer for 10 seconds as it speeds up from a stop. Sketch speed against time. Is your line straight?
