The Human Eye

Class 10 Science: the human eye (defects of vision)

See why some eyes need glasses. Pick an eye and the right lens to focus the image on the retina.

Words to know

Retina
The light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye where the image forms.
Myopia
Short-sightedness: far objects look blurry; corrected with a concave lens.
Hypermetropia
Long-sightedness: near objects look blurry; corrected with a convex lens.
Eye lens
Focuses light onto the retina by changing its shape.

Quick check

Answer 3 questions to check what you learned.

1. A short-sighted person sees clearly…
2. Which lens corrects myopia?
3. Where does the eye form an image?

Try at home

Hold a finger close to your eye and look at it, then look at something far away. Notice the finger blur: your eye lens changes shape to focus near or far.
