Coordinate Geometry

Class 9–10 Maths: coordinate geometry (distance and midpoint)

Move two points on a grid. Find the distance between them and the midpoint using the formulas.

Words to know

Coordinates
A pair (x, y) that gives a point's position.
Origin
The point (0, 0).
Distance formula
√((x₂ − x₁)² + (y₂ − y₁)²).
Midpoint
The point exactly halfway: ((x₁ + x₂)/2, (y₁ + y₂)/2).

Quick check

Answer 3 questions to check what you learned.

1. The distance between (0, 0) and (3, 4) is…
2. The midpoint of (2, 4) and (6, 8) is…
3. The point (−3, 5) lies in which quadrant?

Try at home

Draw a grid on your notebook. Mark your house at (0, 0) and your school, a shop and a friend's house with coordinates. Who lives closest?
